History:
I first became interested in over-the-air broadcasting
in 1962, when I was 9 years old. I can remember
making small cardboard station ID cards and pretending
that I controlled several television stations. At
the time, I lived in central Illinois and we received
one VHF station from Champaign and 3 UHF stations
from Peoria. (Perhaps you may remember UHF converters
that were prominent at the time?) My favourite radio
stations were WJBK, Bloomington and WLS, Chicago.
The next year we moved to Ft. Smith, Arkansas, and
my focus narrowed more towards radio. There, I made
my first broadcasting set out of an old file cabinet,
pretend of course, and gave it the call sign KANT,
named after my small backyard town called Antsville.
Why? I don't know. Who can figure the mind of a
10 year old? My favourite stations were KFSA and
KTCS, both of which I could ride my bike to and
stare in the windows, probably to the irritation
of the station staff. The following year, having
moved to Tyler, Texas, I obtained my first 3-tube
Lafayette AM broadcasting kit. I played phonograph
records and read excerpts from Mad Magazine to our
immediate neighbours. They all probably thought
I was going "no place fast!" It did, however, give
me my first taste of what I thought would become
my life's profession. My favourite stations were
KDOK, KTBB, and the then defunct KGKB. KGKB was
interesting as after lunch, on Sundays, I could
stare through their abandoned studio windows. Nothing
was ever moved and it was just as though the lights
were turned off and everyone went home. Finally,
after moving to Michigan, I was at an age where
I could get my first FCC license: the 3rd class
Radiotelephone. I thought I had it made. (but who
in the Detroit area was going to give a teenage
kid a break? No chance! No way!) My first on-air
job was back in Tyler, Texas, in 1974 at KTBB, then
to KPAN, Hereford, KDJW, Amarillo, and back to KTBB
in 1984. At Broadcast Works, I am involved in scheduling
engineers to various assignments, to meet customer
needs and take advantage of that individual engineer's
particular talents. I trouble shoot problems involving
AM and FM transmission systems and related equipment.
I am involved in equipment installation and wiring,
with FCC compliance and licensing, with material
procurement for construction projects. I will also
recommend broadcast equipment and make specifications
for various broadcast applications.
